But what if we wanted to just find all numerical strings that corresponded to years, i.e. The plus sign gets us all numerical strings, whether they consist of one number or 1,000 numbers. Try running the previous regular expression without the plus sign to see the difference. The result is a list of all strings that contain one or more consecutive numerical digits: 2014 In regular expression, the plus sign is a metacharacter used to indicate that the previous token should be matched one or more times: grep -oE '] ' excerpt.txt As with most things in computing, anytime you see physical repetition, there's usually a shorthand version. the token, ], is repeated 4 times in the above pattern. Let's refer to each instance of ] as being a token, i.e. Take a look at the four-digit pattern again: ]]]] ] - Space characters, including tabs and newlines ] - Numbers 0 to 9 ] - Lower-case letters Here's a few of the character classes that work with grep (and other Unix tools, such as tr): So, to find four numerical digits in a row: grep -oE "]]]]" excerpt.txt Instead, that pattern, ], is the regular expression syntax for match a numerical digit. In the following example that uses ], we are not searching for the literal pattern of ]. To reiterate the first example with 2014, we were searching for the literal pattern of 2014. The regular expression syntax for the character class of numerical digits is simply: \d. So instead of searching for the literal string, 2014, what if we could search for any sequence of four numerical digits? For example, to see if Obama mentioned any other year in his speech? But many times, we have no idea, especially when searching thousands or millions of text files and strings. Matching literal strings is nice when you know exactly what you want. Let's use the grep option, -o, to show only the exact match: grep -oE '2014' excerpt.txt The following invocation of grep and its extended regex option, -E, simply looks for 2014 in excerpt.txt – another way I like to phrase this is that grep is searching for the pattern that contains the literal string, "2014": grep -E '2014' excerpt.txtīy default, grep outputs every line that contains 2014: About a year ago, I promised that 2014 would be a breakthrough year for America. What sets a regular expression apart from your typical find-text function is its use of metacharacters to describe patterns to match, such as, any numerical digit or any non-alphabetical character or the end of a line.īut if we specify a regular expression without any metacharacters, then it simply acts as a straightforward text-finding function. We have cut our deficits by about two-thirds.Īnd after 13 long years, our war in Afghanistan has come to a responsible end, and more of our brave troops have come home. Thanks to the Affordable Care Act, about 10 million Americans have gained health insurance in the past year alone. Over a 58-month streak, our businesses have created 11.2 million new jobs.Īfter a decade of decline, American manufacturing is in its best stretch of job growth since the '90s.Īmerica is now the world’s number one producer of oil and gas, helping to save drivers about a buck-ten a gallon at the pump over this time last year. In 2014, unemployment fell faster than it has in three decades. That means that 2014 was the strongest year for job growth since the 1990s. In December, our businesses created 240,000 new jobs. I've reformatted it to put each sentence on its own line (this is due to a constraint of grep, which can only match patterns by line): Hi, everybody.Ībout a year ago, I promised that 2014 would be a breakthrough year for America.Īnd this week, we got more evidence to back that up. 10, 2015, weekly address, "Resurgence is Real". Eįor the purpose of this guide, we'll use the following excerpt (referred to as excerpt.txt) from President Obama's Jan. The easiest way to utilize regular expressions is through grep (check out the basic tutorial on grep if you haven't already) and by using its extended regular expression option, i.e. I like to think of regular expressions as simply, "finding text, on steroids." But the additional complexity allows us to greatly expand the way we search and filter text.Īt the most basic level, the use of regular expression is no different than doing a Ctrl-F to activate the "Find" function in your word processor. Their syntax represents a mini-language of their own (though not a complete programming language) that has to be memorized. Regular expressions are patterns for describing text that we want to find. A syntax for describing patterns of text, i.e.

“Honestly, a lot of times the scenes that are the most challenging are my favorite because they are so scary and the lead-up to actually doing them is so hard, and then I find that once I’m actually in them and doing them I really enjoy it,” Tyler commented. When asked about which scene was the most challenging to film, Tyler had an intriguing response. I had never really done that before and it was interesting.” There’s something sort of interesting about just not overthinking it too much and just fully trusting in the material and the talent involved and just kind of going off to make the film. I decided and within four days got on a plane to Baton Rouge to make the film. It all sort of came together in this way, and Bobby was going away to make the movie, and literally got there and Matthew wrote me a letter and sort of re-offered it to me. Charlie got attached to do the movie, and Bobby and I are friends with Charlie, they’ve been friends for years. I always find it so interesting how things come together, and suddenly many years later, my best friend who’s a cinematographer, his name is Bobby Bukowski. It was really, you know obviously it’s a lot of complexities going on in there with all the different characters and beliefs and just the story. “I actually met Matthew Chapman for the first time, I think, almost four years ago, and I read the script and had just never read anything quite like it before. In an exclusive interview with uInterview, Tyler spoke about acting on The Ledge (2011). Tyler first became known to television audiences when she starred alongside Alicia Silverstone in the music video for Aerosmith’s song published in 1993 titled “Crazy.” However, she became bored with her modeling career less than a year after she’d started and decided to go into acting. Tyler was given her first modeling job at the age of fourteen. I love the way my life has gone.” LIV TYLER BIOGRAPHY: CAREER When everybody was doing acid and partying like crazy, I was at work on a movie in Tuscany, having my own fun, of course, but it was a different kind of thing. “For me, I didn’t get much of a childhood in my teen years because I’ve been working since I was 14,” Tyler recalled. She graduated from York in 1995 and then went on to continue pursuing her acting career. Tyler also went to the Crossroads School for Arts and Sciences in Santa Monica, California. Tyler attended York Preparatory for both middle school and high school alike, a school that her mother felt comfortable sending her to after spending time researching the schools best suited to accommodate Tyler’s ADHD. Since learning the truth, Tyler has gone on to develop a close relationship with her father, and the two have even performed together on stage, once when Tyler appeared in Aerosmith, and once again when Aerosmith had come to perform songs in the hit film Armageddon. Buell has since stated that the reason for her keeping her true father’s identity hidden was because Steven Tyler was too heavily addicted to drugs at the time of his daughter’s birth. Years after this information had been uncovered, Tyler still called Todd Rundgren her “spiritual father” while expressing her love for him. However, this information had not become public until she had officially changed her last name from Rundgren to Tyler. Tyler only discovered that Steven was her father when they met when Tyler was ten or eleven and asked her mother if they had been related due to their unique resemblance to one another. Her parents were never married, and her mother kept her father a secret from her early on in her childhood, claiming that Todd Rundgren was her father. Tyler was named by her mother after Norwegian actress Liv Ullmann. Her mother was a model and a singer while her father was the lead singer of the rock band Aerosmith. Liv Tyler was born on J(Liv Tyler’s age: 45) in New York City to Bebe Buell and Steven Tyler. LIV TYLER BIOGRAPHY: AGE, EARLY LIFE, FAMILY, EDUCATION She is best known for her roles of Grace Stamper in Armageddon as well as Arwen in The Lord of the Rings movie trilogy. Liv Tyler is an American actress who began her modeling career at the age of fourteen before transferring her skillset to the world of cinema just three years later. If you’re doing a crossword with target language to wrap up the lesson, why not make it competitive. The game show Crosswits basically involved contestants answering crossword clues, with the puzzle displayed on a screen. Good for… language for prediction/probability Here is a 3 minute video of our ‘Crossbar Challenge’ from last year. You can film you and your colleagues completing various challenges, and have some live challenges on the night too. If you are working at a summer school or activity centre then this is a really fun games night to organise. Members of the public would take on difficult challenges, and a celebrity panel would decide if they would complete them or not. This activity can be fun, frantic, and importantly EVERYBODY LISTENS TO THE QUESTIONS! If the contestants are right, they peg the Chaser back one space. If they answer wrong, the contestant has a chance to answer. In this game the Chaser has to answer a certain amount of questions in two minutes. You can make a small group of students the Chasers, and the rest of the class the contestants. This is easily adaptable to the classroom for review games. If the Chaser gets the question right, they move closer to the contestant, in the hope that they catch them. If they get a question right, they move a space closer to safety. In the TV programme there is a part of the game whether contestants answer questions against ‘the Chaser’, who is a quiz expert. Good for… improving memory, revising vocabulary items You can add your own humour by including silly, irrelevant objects like ‘a rubber chicken’. The best thing about the actual show was that one prize was always a cuddly toy. You can do the same game to suit your topic, awarding points for each item/word recalled. They then had a set time to recall the objects, winning each one they could remember. The final challenge on the Generation Game was where contestants saw loads of objects pass by on a conveyor belt. It’s always good to have a range of different games up your sleeve to mix things up a bit. Material: Strength stainless steel, not rust and long lasting.Remove hanging feeders during windy storms or other dangerous weather when tipping or falling is more possible. It is easy to do this check each time the feeder is refilled. Check the feeder and its hook and cord regularly for signs of wear or damage that could cause the feeder to fall.Position feeders either closer than three feet or further than 10-15 feet from windows to minimize the risk of dangerous window collisions that can injure or kill birds. This also helps shed rain or snow and keeps birdseed dry, so it does not spoil as quickly. If needed to deter pests, you should use a baffle above a hanging feeder.Other steps can also help make a feeder more squirrel-resistant. If squirrels are a problem, hang feeders at least six feet above the ground and 10-15 feet away from trees or structures where squirrels can jump.Hang feeders near cover birds can use for shelter, such as a brush pile or nearby trees or shrubs, but not close enough for predators to be concealed and able to attack feeding birds.A lightly shaded location will also provide ideal lighting for watching or photographing birds without glare. Ideally, hang bird feeders in shaded areas to protect seed, nectar, and suet from excessive spoilage.Test that it will stay firmly secure even when the feeder is filled with heavy seed and visited by active birds. Check the sturdiness of the hook, branch, pole, or gutter where the feeder will be hung. Also keep feeders away from busy traffic areas such as sidewalks and pathways where they could be bumped or tipped. Choose a location out of the strongest winds to minimize swaying that can discourage birds and spill seed.Hung properly, feeders can even be inaccessible to squirrels or other popular raiders. Hanging feeders are also less accessible to mice, and while creative wildlife may still reach them, it is easier to protect hanging feeders from disturbances. Off the Ground: When feeders are hung several feet above the ground, that height offers birds additional protection from predators. It also creates safe places for birds, which will readily visit. This allows these feeders to be positioned in many easy places for convenient refilling and satisfying bird watching. Location Convenience: Hanging feeders can be hung from gutters, poles, garden hooks, trees, arbors, arches, or other locations so long as a hook or cord can secure them. If the feeder already has a large enough built-in hook or loop, even that may not be necessary. A simple hook or a length of twine, rope, chain, or cord is all that is typically needed to hang a new bird feeder instantly. According to the Association for Asian Studies, rocks are considered the bones of the earth and are essential to the essence of nature and reality. Zen gardens originally consisted of dry landscapes where stones played a central role. This is why Zen gardens are often referred to as "dry" gardens, as they lack water features and usually have few plants. Instead of vibrant flowers and foliage, a Zen garden is a simple bed of raked gravel, punctuated by a few large rocks, and typically enclosed by shrubs. The root term from which "zen" is derived originally refers to a Sanskrit term that signifies "meditation." However, in Japanese, this type of garden is traditionally called karesansui, which is written as 枯山水 and translates to the characters for 'dry', 'mountain', and 'water'.Ī Zen garden is a minimalist dry landscape consisting of natural elements such as rock, gravel, sand, and wood, with minimal plant life and no water. The term karesansui is often translated into English as a Zen garden. In this article, we will delve into the history and significance of Zen gardens, and explore the essential elements that make them so distinctive and appealing. They are also a popular subject of study and inspiration for artists, designers, and architects worldwide. Zen gardens can be found all over Japan and are appreciated for their simplicity and serenity. (The Art of Zen Gardens: An Exploration of Simplicity and Serenity - dans le gris) The art of constructing a Zen garden is based on the principles of simplicity, harmony, and balance, resulting in a garden that emanates tranquility and inspiration. These gardens are carefully crafted to create a peaceful and meditative space for visitors to contemplate the natural beauty of rocks, sand, and gravel arranged in intricate patterns that evoke the grandeur of a landscape. The Buddha’s self-sacrifice to save starving creatures is a lesson in compassion on the path to attaining enlightenment.Japanese Zen gardens, also known as Karesansui, Japanese rock gardens, or dry landscape gardens, are a beautiful and unique form of traditional Japanese gardening that has captured the hearts and minds of people worldwide. The story is recorded on a painted panel in the Horyu-ji temple at Nara and other Buddhist artifacts depicting the Buddha facing the dilemma of saving a starving tigress and her cubs trapped in a ravine. Professor Tono was inspired by the Jataka Sutra, a 2,000 year old Indian tale about a previous incarnation of Buddha. Portland Japanese Garden’s Sand and Stone Garden was designed by Professor Takuma Tono in the 1960s when Zen Buddhism was little known or understood in this country. A bird’s-eye view of the Sand and Stone Garden. Care of the garden was part of the monk’s practice. Often attached to the abbot’s quarters, this style of garden was not meant for meditation, but for contemplation. In Japan, this style of garden is often part of a Zen monastery, such as the famous Ryoan-ji in Kyoto. While dry landscape gardens are sometimes referred to as Zen gardens, it is more accurate to refer to them as karesansui. Gardens of raked sand or gravel and stone are referred to as karesansui gardens which literally translates to “dry landscape.” This style was developed in Japan in the late Kamakura period (1185–1333) and an important Japanese aesthetic principle underlying these dry landscape gardens is yohaku-no-bi, meaning “the beauty of blank space.” Photo by Tyler Quinn Posts about playtime and achievements will be removed.
